LCA Tejas Missed one of its target at IAF exercise; probe orderedNew Delhi, March 22, 2016: In notable miss for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, it missed its target on firing the Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) at the Indian Air Force`s (IAF) mega exercise `Iron Fist` at Pokhran in Rajasthan on March 18.

Even as the indigenised aircraft did make a kill with the short range air-to-air missile R-73, the IAF has ordered a probe into how the fighter jet which is in its advanced stage of induction missed target with the LGB, said a senior IAF functionary who did not wish to be named.

According to IAF, a total of 500 rockets, 108 bombs and five surface-to-air missiles were fired at Iron Fist, of which LCA`s, as mentioned above, was a confirmed miss. Another shot by a Mirage 2000 fighter was aborted due to technical reasons.

181 fighter aircraft, including the Sukhoi 30s, MiGs, Jaguar and Mirage from across the country flew Pokhran to demonstrate live firepower. The indigenously developed Tejas which is nearing Final Operational Clearance before going for production, is likely to be inducted in IAF later this year.

The single-engine multi-role fighter LCA Tejas that recently took part in the Bahrain International Airshow did precision bombing during the exercise.

IAF is looking to commission a new squadron of the home grown which is expected to replace the ageing MiG 21 and MiG 27 aircraft.

The senior functionary, quoted above pointed that the " it were training targets and not actual targets that were fired at during the exercise. In actual conditions, the target is much bigger ".
"We have ordered a new system Maneuverable Expandable Aerial Target (MEAT). that will serve as larger targets. The file is with the Ministry of Defence," he said.
